Do hummingbirds really fly across the Gulf of Mexico?

Yes. Many Ruby-throated Hummingbirds migrate directly across the Gulf of Mexico each fall and spring, a nonstop flight of roughly 500 miles that typically takes 18 to 22 hours of continuous wingbeats over open water.

How far do hummingbirds fly over the Gulf of Mexico?

The trans-Gulf route is approximately 500 miles of open water between the U.S. Gulf Coast and the Yucatán Peninsula. The birds cannot land, rest, or feed during the crossing.

How long does the Gulf crossing take a hummingbird?

Estimates generally range from 18 to 22 hours of nonstop flight, depending on winds and weather. Favorable northerly tailwinds behind autumn cold fronts reduce the energy cost of the journey.

How can a 3-gram hummingbird fly 500 miles without stopping?

Before departing, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds enter a period of intense feeding and nearly double their body weight in stored fat. That fat reserve is the entire fuel supply for the crossing, burned gram by gram over roughly 500 miles.

Do all Ruby-throated Hummingbirds cross the Gulf?

No. Banding recoveries and radar studies show two strategies: some birds fly directly across the Gulf, while others take a longer overland route around the Gulf through Texas and Mexico. Both pathways are used every year.

Will leaving my feeder up in fall stop hummingbirds from migrating?

No. Migration is triggered by day length and internal rhythms, not food availability. A clean feeder left up into September and October helps late migrants build the fat reserves they need for the journey.

Do hummingbirds ride on the backs of geese to migrate?

No — that is a myth with no basis in biology. Hummingbirds migrate entirely under their own power, either overland through Mexico or nonstop across the Gulf of Mexico.

How do hummingbirds navigate across open water?

Like other migratory birds, hummingbirds are believed to use an internal compass, the sun's position, and cues from the Earth's magnetic field to hold a course across hundreds of miles of featureless ocean.
