What hummingbirds are in Texas during fall?

Ruby-throated and Black-chinned Hummingbirds are widespread fall species in Texas. Depending on location and timing, Rufous, Broad-tailed, Calliope, Broad-billed, Buff-bellied, Anna's, and other hummingbirds may also occur.

How can I tell a Ruby-throated Hummingbird from a Black-chinned Hummingbird?

Compare several clues rather than throat color alone. Black-chinned Hummingbirds generally have longer bills and folded wings reaching the tail tip, while Ruby-throated Hummingbirds generally have more tapered wings and a tail extending farther beyond them.

Why does a Ruby-throated Hummingbird's throat look black?

The male's gorget is iridescent. It can look black in shade or at the wrong angle and flash ruby red only when light strikes its feather structure correctly.

Is a hummingbird without a red throat always female?

No. It may be a female, an immature male, or another species. Young males often show only scattered developing throat feathers during fall.

Are Rufous Hummingbirds found in Texas?

Yes. Rufous Hummingbirds occur in Texas during fall migration and winter. Adult males are often orange-rufous, while females and young birds may be green with buffy sides and rusty tail feathers.

What should I do if I see an unusual hummingbird?

Take photographs from several angles, record the date and county, save the original files, and report the observation through eBird, iNaturalist, or a trusted local birding organization.
